‘Basterds’ on Friday or Quentin Tarantino’s butt-crazy Top 20 list

Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” comes out this Friday. I’ll just post something Tarantino-related everyday because, fuck it, I’ve been waiting for this movie for, like, five years. Back when Sly Stone and Adam Sandler were supposed to be in it.

Quentin Tarantino named his Top 20 favorite movies from 1992 to the present. Why 1992? Because that’s the year he became a bonafide director, the year “Reservoir Dogs” came out. Good times.

He’s got a pretty sweet list. He names his favorite and the remaining 19 in alphabetical order. You can watch it above or just peruse the list and pull quotes I’ve got below. I particularly enjoyed his inclusion of a certain rejected Woody Allen movie.

His Favorite: “Battle Royale” (2000) directed by Kinji Fukasaku
“If there’s any movie that’s been made since I’ve been making movies that I wish I had made, it’s that one.”

No. 2: “Anything Else” (2003) directed by Woody Allen
“That’s the Jason Biggs movie.”

No. 3: “Audition” (1999) directed by Takashi Miike
“A true masterpiece if there ever was one.”

No. 4: “The Blade” (1995) directed by Tsui Hark
“… which is a remake of Chang Cheh’s “The One-Armed Swordsman.”

No. 5: “Boogie Nights” (1997) directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

No. 6: “Dazed and Confused” (1993) directed by Richard Linklater
“Along with ‘Rio Bravo,’ I think maybe the greatest hangout movie ever made.”

No. 7: “Dogville” (2003) directed by Lars von Trier
“… which I think is maybe one of the greatest scripts maybe ever written for film. I actually think if he would have actually have done it on the stage, he would have won a Pulitzer Prize.”

No. 8: “Fight Club” (1999) directed by David Fincher

No. 9: “Friday” (1995) directed by F. Gary Gray

No. 10: “The Host” (2006) directed by Bong Joon-ho
“… absolutely wonderful Korean monster movie… “

No. 11: “The Insider” (1999) directed by Michael Mann

No. 12: “Joint Security Area” (2000) directed Chan-wook Park
“… also known as ‘JSA’… “

No. 13: “Lost in Translation” (2003) directed by Sofia Coppola

No. 14: “The Matrix” (1999) directed by The Wachowski Brothers
“There was a time actually that I would have considered ‘Matrix’ the official number two after ‘Battle Royale’; however, I have to say that was before ‘Matrix’ 2 and 3 came out and actually ruined the mythology for me.”

No. 15: “Memories of Murder” (2003) directed by Bong Joon-ho
“One of the most interesting and complex films on this entire list.”

No. 16: “Supercop” (1992) directed by Stanley Tong
“A movie that I think actually probably contains the greatest stunts — and that’s even including Buster Keaton — the greatest stunts ever filmed in any movie ever, and look no further than Michelle Yeoh jumping a motorcycle onto a speeding train and, uh, actually not quite pulling it off in the outtakes.”

No. 17: “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) directed by Edgar Wright
“Hands down, my favorite British movie that has come out since I’ve been making movies.”

No. 18: “Speed” (1994) directed by Jan de Bont
“That’s even discounting the last 20 minutes of the movie, which basically, you know, once the bus blows up, the movie’s over. It might be easy to take ‘Speed’ for granted, but if you actually remember when ‘Speed’ came out what it was like to sit in the movie theater as that bus was going down the road, there really has been few exhilaration movies quite like it.”

No. 19: “Team America: World Police” (2004) directed by Trey Parker

No. 20: “Unbreakable” (2000) directed by M. Night Shyamalan
“Unbreakable’ is, I think, one of the masterpieces of our time.”

So. There you have it. Tarantino’s list. And it’s a pretty ripshit list if you ask me. Totally agree with his inclusion of “Unbreakable.” Watched that movie for the first time last year. An amazing, amazing movie. I can’t support most of his choices, but his list is certainly fun as shit. I mean, c’mon? “Anything Else?” I love that movie! And no one else even seems to like it. Critics desecrated it.

Whatevs. No worries. Go see “Inglourious Basterds” on Friday.
